Kids are burning out.

NPR gathered some distressing reports from parents across the US. Everything from tantrums and violence to grief and even suicidal thoughts.

In conversations with our friends, my wife and I continue to hear about evolving struggles through the weeks of lockdown when it comes to families, kids, and learning.

How can we make it better?

Recognize burnout. 3 factors to help identify burnout:

  1. Feelings of exhaustion

  2. Increased negative feelings

  3. Reduced performance

And 3 actions you can take if you know a kid struggling with adjustments as the weeks wear on:

  1. Focus on relationships. Become aware of how your kids feel. Sit down and talk. Give longer hugs.

  2. Think outside the box. School at home doesn’t look like school at school. Focus on the outcomes you want. Lots of possibilities to get there.

  3. Create and learn together. Instead of telling others what to do, learn together. This works for kids learning at home and for the people you work with.
